Study tour of Cuba 10-20th September 2021

Following two successful tours in 2018 and 2019, the Department of Politics at the University of Buckingham is once again offering this study visit to Cuba led by Dr Stephen Wilkinson, who lectures on Latin American and Cuban Politics. Steve is Editor of the International Journal of Cuban Studies and the Director of International Institute for the Study of Cuba. Steve has been visiting Cuba since 1987, holds a PHD in Cuban Literature and has led more than twenty study tours to the island.

The flights and itinerary are organised by the ATOL/ABTA protected Cuba Specialist Travel company LoveCuba.

The tour will deepen participants’ understanding of history, politics, economics and international relations as well as expand their knowledge of Cuba, its unique character and history. It includes 4 nights staying in casas particulares (B&Bs in Cuban family homes). There will also be time to relax, explore Havana and enjoy a couple of days at the beach!

We will be flying economy with Virgin Atlantic departing from Heathrow on Friday 10th September and returning overnight on Sunday 19th arriving in Heathrow on Monday 20th. The group will stay at the famous Habana Libre Hotel in Havana.

The price £1,729 includes the visa, flight, nine nights (2 in all inclusive the rest B&B) in hotels and casas, English speaking tourist guide, transfers, visits, and stated lunches, based on a shared double room. A single supplement of £250 applies to those who do not wish to share a room.

The tour is for students, alumni, staff. But relatives, friends and interested others are welcome to join as well.

ONCE WE HAVE A LIST OF INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS, we will arrange a meeting on Microsoft Teams where Dr Wilkinson and Charmaine from LoveCuba will explain the programme.

(A non-refundable deposit of £150 will be required to make the fight reservations. Payment must be received by 9th June. The balance for the tour must be paid by 9th July).

Day 1 10/9/21 Arrival to Havana Airport Jose Marti and transfer to Varadero. Accommodation at an AI hotel in Varadero for 2 nights Melia Peninsula

Day 2 11/9/21 Free day in Varadero

Day 3 12/9/21 9.00 am Departure to Trinidad. On route visit to Santa Clara city including Ernesto Ché Guevara Mausoleum and tren blindado (armored train). Lunch included at Los Caneyes Accommodation in casas ,BB for 2 nights.

Day 4 13/9/21 9:00 am After breakfast departure for a tour through the historic center of the city. Include visit to the Romantic Museum, Manaca Iznaga tower. Valle de los Ingenios (valley of sugar mills). Lunch Included at Bodeguita del Medio.

Day 5 14/9/21 9:00 am Departure to Viñales, on route visit to the Bay of Pigs, visit to the Museum of Playa Girón, visit to the Crocodiles farm. Lunch Included at Fiesta Campesina. Accommodation in casas BB for 2 nights.

Day 6 15/9/21 9:00 am After breakfast visit to the Lookout point at Los Jazmines, Prehistoric Mural, Indian cave, visit to a tobacco farm with lunch included at Finca San Vicente.

Day 7 16/9/21 9:00 am Departure to Havana and continue for a city tour visiting the Square of the Revolution. Capitolio. Old Havana with the 4 main squares at the historical center. Include visit to Jose Marti museum. Lunch Included at Floridita. Accommodation for 3nights.

Day 8m17/9/21 Free day in Havana

Day 9 18/9/21 Free day in Havana

Day 10, 19/9/21 Transfer out to Havana Airport to take the return flight

The deposit on this is £150 per person and the balance is payable 8 weeks prior to departure

*Please note the price and itinerary is subject to confirmation at this stage. Some of the visits may be retimed or altered but substitute activities will be arranged. If Covid restrictions prevents the trip from going ahead, refunds will be made.

Love Cuba/termsandconditions

VISAS: Travel to Cuba requires you to purchase a Tourist Card/Visa. These will be supplied by Love Cuba and the cost is included in the price.

INSURANCE: If you are a student or employee of the University, you will be covered by the University’s policy. Stacey will provide details. If you are not a student or employee, you will need to acquire travel insurance, Love Cuba can advise on this.

COVID: As of the 23/04/21 visitors to Cuba must have a negative PCR Test outcome within 72 hours prior to travel to the island. The UK currently prohibits travel abroad for a holiday. This tour is being advertised assuming the permissions will be changed by the time it takes place,. If travel is not permitted a refund will be made.
