Journal to go Open Access from 1st Jan

The International Journal of Cuban Studies, the official publication of the IISC, is among 21 titles published by the Pluto Educational Trust that will go fully open access on 1st January, 2021.

Sin sorpresa, la toma de posesión de Donald Trump ha marcado un viraje de 180° en la política exterior de Estados Unidos hacia Cuba. Lejos de proseguir con la política de acercamiento iniciada por Obama, al contrario, ha procedido a un recrudecimiento de las sanciones contra la isla atacando las tres principales fuentes de ingresos del país: la cooperación médica internacional, las transferencias de remesas procedentes de la comunidad cubana en Estados Unidos y el turismo.

Former Cuban Minister of the Economy to speak at University of Buckingham

Leading Cuban economist and former Minister of the Economy, José Luis Rodríguez, is to give a seminar at the University of Buckingham organised through the IISC and the International Journal of Cuban Studies. The seminar entitled: 'Managing the Cuban Economy in a time of Crisis' will take place in the Anthony De Rothschild Building, Room 1, Hunter Street Campus, at 12 noon on Tuesday 10th March.

Fidel Castro: Hero of the disinherited

Three aspects characterize the figure of Fidel Castro. First of all, he is the architect of national sovereignty, the person who restored dignity to the people of the island by realizing the dream of the Apostle and National Hero José Martí for an independent Cuba. Secondly, he is a social reformer who has taken up the cause of the humble and the humiliated. Finally, he is an internationalist who extends a generous hand to needy people everywhere and places solidarity and integration at the center of Cuba’s foreign policy.

The US move towards Cuba and the Cuban move towards the market

Since 17 December 2014 when the rapprochement between the United States and Cuba was announced, there has been an intensified focus on Cuba in the media. Speculation is mounting that the United States is preparing to lift its 50-year-old economic embargo of the island. This paper places this diplomatic development in the broader context of the process of economic and political liberalisation that has been taking place in the island under the leadership of Raúl Castro and the changing demographics of southern Florida.
