Meeting with Missile Crisis historians and educational experts
Education, training and history exchanges
On 10 February, IISC director Dr Stephen Wilkinson held talks with the Dr Milda Díaz Masip, the Rectora of Cuba’s University of Pedagogic Science Enrique José Varona (Pictured far right) and agreed to sign a memorandum of agreement to work together for mutual benefit.
The pedagogic university is the leading institution for the training of teachers and lecturers in Cuba. Since its foundation in 1964 it has trained more than 64,000 professionals and is at the forefront of Cuba’s impressive education system. Among the cooperation ideas discussed was the inclusion of Cuban specialists in the University of Buckingham’s series of training workshops in teaching and learning.
The pair also agreed to include a visit to the Pedagogic University in the study tour for students and staff scheduled to take place in September.
Dr Wilkinson, is in Havana for the Cuban higher education conference Universidad 2022, along with some 400 live participants and more than 1,000 online participants, for a week of workshops and panels discussing different aspects of the challenges facing the HE sector in a world that is striving for sustainability and recovery from Covid 19.
Talking History
During his stay Dr Wilkinson has held talks and signed agreements with a number of Cuban institutions in order to develop the work of the IISC, located at the University of Buckingham, where he is Senior lecturer in Politics and International Relations and the Vice-Chairman of the University Teaching Learning and Assessment committee.
The night before, Dr Wilkinson had dinner with Professor Tomas Díez Acosta (Left: Centre) of the Cuban History Institute, and Professor Haken Karlson (Right) of the University of Gutenberg, experts on the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, to discuss their work and agreement to participate in a conference to commemorate the crisis to be held at the University of Buckingham on October 15th this year.
Professors Díez and Karlson are the authors of The Missile Crisis from a Cuban Perspective published by Routledge. Professor Díez, as well as being the most renowned living Cuban historian of the crisis, was also a veteran protagonist in the events that took place 60 years ago.
Further details of the study tour and the crisis conference will be published shortly.
